QUESTION:

Age Discrimination of Medically Retired Teachers in Alaska

Would it be considered age discrimination if you were medically retired with 12 years of service as a public school administrator/teacher in alaska and when you reached the age of sixty you were rolled over into regular retiement and your retirement pay reduced by 2.5% for each year you hadn't worked between the twelve years I did work an the twenty years I needed to recieve full retirement pay. I am still handicapped and unable to find employment because of my condition. It is imposible to live in Alaska or anyother state on the amount of retirement pay the state of Alaska Teacher Retirement System pays their older retired teachers. They also took the cost of living pay that all other retired teachers recieve if they retire and stay in Alaska the remainder of their life. Please let me know if you can help me to get this unfair practice changed and get fair treatment for me and other teachers who have or might find themselves in this situtation.

Your situation sounds complicated.

For your concerns about age discrimination, you may want to contact the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). http://www.eeoc.gov/

They have information and guidance for discrimination based on both disability and age.
Guidance for Age Discrimination: http://www.eeoc.gov/types/age.html
Guidance for Disability Discrimination: http://www.eeoc.gov/types/ada.html

While complicated, the situation you face is not at all uncommon. Many seniors are realizing that they simply do not have enough money for retirement.

A few additional resources that may be helpful to you:

1) A reverse mortgage is giving many seniors additional funds for retirement. Learn more about Reverse Mortgages here: http://www.newretirement.com/Services/Reverse_Mortgage.aspx

2) Downsizing and moving to a less expensive residence is also a popular option: http://www.newretirement.com/Services/Relocation.aspx
