QUESTION:

Long in the Tooth !

With all the talk about health insurance these days, little is mentioned about the possible need for catastrophic dental coverage for seniors.

As our life expectancy is extended, we're replacing disintegrating fillings with new cosmetically improved ones; attending to our gums (gingevitis anyone?) along with occasional bitewings and "prophys".

My situation, called implant with bone grafting, surgical placement, and sinus elevation became necessary after a wobbly tooth began infecting the surrounding tissue necessitating extraction and implant procedures. Woefully, infection had also invaded a sinus area. (These required procedures, even though clearly surgical in nature, are dis-allowed by my medical insurance plan. How about your plan?)

Unforeseen fees are ringing in my new year with a staggering price tag of $5,000 (when you add the cosmetically appropriate crown and adjacent restorations, x-rays, and checkups).

Something to chew on, right? Just keep smiling.
