QUESTION:

Social Security Question

I'm 64 and will not take social security until I'm 70. My wife is 61. Would it be best for her to take social security at 62 or to wait until she hits 66? I should say she would get about $250 at age 62. At 70 I will get about $3000.

While we are not allowed to provide advice, and thus cannot state that a given course of action would be best, given what you have indicated to us, it sounds like you are considering a common strategy that married couples employ for maximizing social security, wherein one spouse waits until age 70 to retrieve their benefits, and the other takes the benefits as quickly as possible. In this way, they take advantage of spousal benefits, while still accumulating credit from deferring their personal retirement benefits. Moreover, should circumstances change, you can simply repay the benefits you have thus far received to resume accumulating credits.

We cannot give advice as to whether or not this tactic is suitable in your specific financial case. However, you should consider consulting our information resources on this subject at https://www.newretirement.com/Services/Social-Security-Spousal-Benefits.aspx.
