As with all retirement planning programs, earlier is better when deciding when to start planning. It may be of some help to speak to a professional adviser in the field however so as to get an idea of your options as you make plans for your pension.

Not everyone gets a pension.

If you are lucky enough to be employed somewhere that has a pension program, you should start participating as soon as possible. This is a very valuable benefit.

A pension is a regular payment made by an employer to people over a certain age to enable them to subsist without having to work. You generally earn a pension over XX years of service to your employer.

However, pensions are becoming less and less common as they are incredibly expensive for employers to fund. As such, many people are saving their own money for retirement and sometimes purchasing lifetime annuities with their own savings. An annuity can act like a pension -- the difference is that you are buying it yourself rather than the company funding the expense.
