Retirement News: Alzheimer's, Safe Sex for Seniors and More...
Alzheimer's, Safe Sex and More...

As always, there is much research on health issues critical to seniors.
  • Research abounds on Alzheimer's disease. Exercise and Vitamin D are reported to cut Alzheimer's risk, having a bigger head supposedly slows Alzheimer's development plus reports that experts are optimistic about solving Alzheimer's.
  • Experts are advising that seniors improve their record on safe sex. Sixty year olds are currently six times less likely to use a condom than those in their 20s. And while pregnancy is less of a risk, sexually transmitted diseases are!
  • The rate of hip fractures in older Americans has significantly declined. While the reasons for the decline are unknown, this is great news since a hip fracture is a devastating injury to the elderly.
  • Researchers found a link between dementia and both a gene linked to obesity and vitamin D deficiency.

A Giant in the Field of Aging Dies at Age 83

Dr. Robert Butler who is widely credited with creating and promoting the field of gerontology - the study of aging.--died this month at age 83.

His many notable accomplishments include founding the National Institute on Aging, coining the word ageism, winning the Pulitzer Prize for one of his many books, promoting aging issues into the public discourse and working full time up until just three days before his death.

The NYTimes reported that "In speech after speech, he pounded home the message that longevity in the United States had increased by 30 years in the 20th century -- greater than the gain during the preceding 5,000 years of human history -- and that this had led to profound changes in every aspect of society, employment and politics among them."

Is Hating Your Job a Reason to Retire?

According to the Conference Board, the likelihood that you are unsatisfied with your career is higher than ever before. Their research indicates that job satisfaction hit a record low in 2009 with only 45 percent of workers reporting contentment in their jobs.

The researchers suggest that the dissatisfaction stems from the impression that it is harder for the average American to get ahead. Inflation adjusted incomes have stagnated while out of pocket health insurance costs have risen sharply. Though retirement may be tempting if you do not like your job, it may not be the wisest financial move. However, many seniors are switching jobs near the end of their careers - finding work that is more satisfying to them and enabling them to continue to save for retirement and delay the start of their Social Security benefits.
