• Question
  • If I retire from self employment am I elligable for social security

    Asked on 1/3/2009

If my father owned and operated a farm and also worked a full time job in manufacturing, is he able to collect social security on the total amount of income he earned including money earned on the farm and his manufacturing job? Then if my father passed away would my mother continue to receive full benefits from both jobs?

  • I think the answer to your question would depend on whether or not your Father paid into Social Security with the income he earned from the farm.

You may want to contact Social Security directly to learn the answer to your question. They can be contacted at:

You might want to visit your local Social Security office. You can locate it here: https://secure.ssa.gov/apps6z/FOLO/fo001.jsp

You can also call the toll-free Social Security number 1-800-772-1213

The answer should be, if you showed a positive income, yes.

On your father, you may want to check to see if he paid SS taxes in excess of what was required.

If he showed income from all sources, because he should have paid them or had the benefits deducted, the answer should be yes.

And farm income is a different squirrel, but the answer should still be yes.

And your mother's SS benefits are a factor of your father's income, regardless of how many jobs he had.
